Military Car Shipping Guide: PCS Move + Free Military Discount

Military Car Shipping Guide: PCS Move + Free Military Discount

PCS orders mean moving fast — and your car needs to move with you. Here's exactly how to ship your vehicle during a Permanent Change of Station, including the military discounts available and the best timing strategies.

Does the Military Pay for Car Shipping?

The military covers transportation of one personal vehicle for eligible PCS moves through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). If you qualify, you submit a request through your transportation office and the government arranges (and pays for) the shipment. However, not all moves qualify, and the process has strict timelines.

For moves where government-paid transport isn't available — or if you have a second vehicle — you'll need to arrange private auto transport. This is also common for moves involving vehicles that don't meet government transport criteria.

Military Discount on Private Car Shipping

Uwon Carriers offers a military discount for active-duty service members, reservists, veterans, and military family members. When requesting a quote, mention your military status and we'll apply the discount automatically. Typical savings are $50–$150 depending on the route.

PCS Move Car Shipping Timeline

  1. Book 2–3 weeks in advance — PCS moves are stressful with tight windows. Booking early gives you the best carrier selection and pricing.
  2. Provide your report date — Tell your broker your report date at the new duty station. We work backward from that to schedule pickup in time.
  3. Consider port-to-port for overseas PCS — For OCONUS moves to Hawaii, Alaska, or overseas, you'll need to use an approved Vehicle Processing Center (VPC).
  4. Keep your orders accessible — Some carriers offer discounts upon verification of orders. Have them ready at pickup.

Tips for a Smooth Military Car Shipment

  • Remove any DOD or base stickers if possible to avoid security issues during transport
  • Leave 1/4 tank of gas — enough for loading and unloading
  • Document your vehicle thoroughly before pickup — photos of every angle
  • Confirm pickup and delivery addresses match your orders if using government shipment
  • For international moves, check with your destination country's customs requirements early

OCONUS Moves: Shipping to Hawaii, Alaska, or Overseas

For OCONUS PCS moves, the government typically ships one vehicle via military sealift. You'll drop off at an approved Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) and pick up at the destination VPC. Private transport can be arranged for additional vehicles — call us for current rates to Hawaii, Alaska, or specific overseas bases.
