How to File a Car Shipping Damage Claim (Step-by-Step)
Car transport damage is rare — statistically under 1% of shipments — but it does happen. Knowing the correct process before your vehicle ships is the best protection you have.
Step 1: Document Before Pickup (Critical)
The single most important thing you can do is document your vehicle's condition thoroughly before the carrier picks it up. Take:
- Photos of all four sides (front, back, driver side, passenger side)
- Close-up shots of any existing dings, scratches, or chips
- Photos of the interior (seats, dashboard, any existing stains)
- A timestamp on the photos using your phone
- Photos of the odometer reading
Step 2: Review and Sign the Bill of Lading at Pickup
The Bill of Lading (BOL) is the legal contract between you and the carrier. Before signing it at pickup, review the carrier's pre-existing damage notes carefully. If the carrier notes damage that doesn't exist, dispute it on the spot. If existing damage is accurate, confirm it's documented. Never sign a blank BOL.
Step 3: Inspect at Delivery — Before Signing
When your vehicle arrives, inspect it before signing the delivery BOL. Do this in daylight if at all possible. Check every panel, the roof, the wheels, and the undercarriage. If you notice any new damage:
- Note it specifically on the delivery BOL ("3-inch scratch on rear bumper, driver side")
- Take photos immediately at the delivery location
- Do not move the vehicle until documentation is complete
- Get the driver's signature acknowledging the noted damage
Step 4: File the Claim
Contact the carrier's insurance company and Uwon Carriers within 24 hours of delivery. Provide:
- Your original pre-transport photos
- Delivery BOL with noted damage
- Delivery photos
- An estimate from a body shop for the repair cost
Claims for noted damage (on the BOL) are typically resolved within 30–60 days. Claims for damage discovered after signing (without BOL notation) are significantly harder to pursue — this is why pre-signing inspection is so critical.
